My friend, Jim, and I had set up on
a bird at first light. He gobbled non-stop
for about 30 minutes. I yelped, purred,
cutt, basically did anything and everything
I knew to do to get him to head over our
way. And he did - right into the aim of
another hunter!
Deflated to say the least, we headed
over toward another bird we had heard
earlier. Walking in, Jim said he thought
he heard one gobble. We stopped to call,
and boy, was he ever right! We had walked
to within about 100 yds. of him. We set
up our dekes quickly, and I started calling.
He gobbled at everything but me. Finally,
after about 45 minutes, I started cutting
and cackling very aggressively. He answered
immediately and I set my slate down. He
appeared about 45 yds. away, strutting
up a storm. When he finally walked into
the shooting lane (we were by a deer stand),
he saw the decoys, and came a runnin`.
He stopped at about 20 steps, and I shot.
This was my first turkey to call in,
and it's a feeling that's indescribable!
