I started the morning
off by working a Tom near a river. Several
hens got between me and the Tom so I decided
to let them go on and then come back another
time to try again. I went to the other
side of the property and started to walk
down a dirt road. I was nearing a wood
line when I heard the bird gobble. I stopped,
listened, and he gobbled again. I slipped
into the woods, sat down and made several
soft yelps. He then answered me. I waited
15 min., but nothing happened. I started
to purr when he broke in with a double
gobble. I waited and he then gobbled again.
I have learned to hold back on calling
too much, so I waited for him to move
in slowly. However, he never did. I
then decide after an hour of this to
make my move. I eased thru the creek
bottom about 100 yards parallel to where
I had setup. I noticed the field up
to my left about 80 yards, So I sat
up facing the field. I waited for a
few minutes, and then made 3 soft yelps,
nothing, I then cackled once and he
double gobbled. At the same time I saw
him coming straight towards me. He was
spittin' and drummin' and gobbling.
I shot him at 15 yards.
