This was the opening morning of the
2003 spring season. The hunt started
around 6:15 am and ended at 6:45. Much
like last year, I got up a little late
but with cloudy skies and drizzle I
didn't feel the need to be much in a
rush. I spent the first 20 minutes listening
and trying to figure out how to set
up. Just then a small flock of geese
came over and in the distance I thought
that I heard a gobble so I put my diaphragm
in and started to call.
Soon after I heard him answer so I
sat down and got ready. He came from
approx. 600 yards and on an all out
run! I had never seen anything like
it! He would run about 75 yards and
all in one motion he would break down
into an all out strut. He did this 5
different times that I saw. Every time
that he would strut I would call again
and again he would break out of his
strut and run full bore. LOL it was
the darndest thing that I had ever seen!
Just as he got to within 35 yards
I took the shot only to have him jump
straight up in the air 10 feet. When
he came back down he ran straight away
from me and fell to the ground with
a second shot at 48 yards. I love this
sport there is nothing quite like it
! I thank you all for letting me share
yet another story and I hope that you
enjoyed it! Thanks again guys and gals
and may every day be a success!
