I went to one of my favorite spots and with only one day left in the season, I had to be aggressive. I heard the first gobble at 5:18 am and took off toward it. As I neared the roost within 200 yds., two more gobbled off to my left and I was sort of caught between a rock and a hard spot. Not wanting to risk bumping one, I set up about 150 yd. from the most active bird. He gobbled till about 6 am,then came down and started toward me.

The other two clammed up and I thought it was going to be an easy kill until two hens came in and stole him from me. He went into strut and they moved slowly away from me into a ravine. I took out my gobbler call and let one loose and he responded immediately. He gobbled again and I answered. The only chance to get him back up even with me was to make him mad or jealous and it worked. Within about 15 min., he cut the distance in half. He started coming quick as I was near his roost site after moving on him three different times. He came onto the logging road just below me and at about 35 yd. I took a clean shot as he was looking for that intruder. He was one of the birds I'd been hunting all season. All I did the last 45 mins or so was gobble. Every time he answered, I gobbled back. His spurs were sharp and curved.

Now I can rest till fall.
