Second Day
Rain was forecasted again for the
next day but I was hoping to get back
there and get the other tom. I was up
at 4 am and got the morning chores done
and was on my way. I arrived at the
parking area and begin the short climb
up to the power line in a light rain.
When I reached the power line I didn’t
do any calling but headed to the top
of the hill where I was the day before.
I just stood there and listened for
a minute and it wasn’t long and they
started. There were at least 4 toms
gobbling on the roost but this time
I was ready. I set the hen decoy and
got into position.
I sat there waiting for it to get
light. The birds kept gobbling and when
I figured the time was right I started
working the box call ,,,,,,,,,,, but
no response. I then tried the slate
call and still nothing. I kept calling
alternating between the slates and box
but could not get any return talk. I
decided to just sit and listen for a
bit.
After half an hour of calling and
listening, two bald heads appeared,
coming up over the edge of the bank
30 yards from me the exact same place
as the day before. When they got in
the pines I raised the gun in position.
I could see the birds through the pines
and when the lead bird spotted the decoy
the tail fanned. I could tell it wasn’t
a jake so when he came into the open
down he went. It was the same spot as
the day before and another two year
old bird with an 8 1/2 inch beard and
7/8 inch spurs.
