Story
of the Hunt
Longtime friend and turkey
hunting buddy, Jimmy Majors, was hunting
a three day hunt with me and having
this bird hang up on us the day before
gobbling and strutting his head off
for over an hour, not 65 yards away,
tore us up. The bird had done the same
thing with me and my son Will the weekend
before so I now knew we'd just have
to get in front of this smart tom.
Well, the next day the
boss went to gobbling the ridges of
a nice hardwood bottom. The tops had
been clearcut and we figured that's
where the hens would be headed and off
we went on a mile and a half chase.
We crossed a big ole creek 3 different
times as this tom really knew how to
throw his gobbles. In a trek that ended
up like the shape of a W, we ended up
on the top easing up to a clear cut
woodpile.
When I eased up, I saw
tail and whispered to Jimmy, "He's
here". Jimmy eased up, gun ready
and three hens and a jake were leading
the tom around. Jimmy whispered, "I
can bust him from here". I said,
wait for the hens to get out of the
way. I clucked loudly and got the hens
neverous and they veered off to our
left, not five yards away. A sharp putt
from me brought the toms head high and
out of of full strut to half strut looking
for us.
Jimmy fired and off we
went to do the dead bird rodeo. Jimmy
lost five points due to not getting
both legs and ended up with a nice slash
from a super sharp spur. Man, a good
time was had by both and some memories
made for a lifetime.
