Story of the Hunt

I went down to visit my son and family in Rutherfordton, NC in April 2001. My son Steve said bring your shotgun and we will go turkey hunting.

We set out that morning really early and went down to his hunting club. We got there just before daylight and walked down toward where we were going to set up. It was just getting daylight and to our surprise we heard a gobbler call.

We were caught by surprise and did not even have time to set out our decoy. We sat down by a pine tree and Steve gave a call on his box call. The old boy answered and he seemed to be coming closer. Sure enough after another call the turkey came right in but not seeing a decoy he was nervous.

He stuck his head out behind a big pine and I took aim at his head. Luck was with me and down he went. We stopped at a weigh in sports shop and the bird weighted 21 lbs. and had a 11 inch beard, spurs were 1 1/4".

This was the first turkey hunt with my son Steve and first In North Carolina. Biggest turkey I have gotten as of today. It sure was great.
