Story
of the Hunt
I had been hunting the
area using a Lone Hen call on my grandfather's
farm in Talladega, AL for about two
weeks with a lot of sign and a good
many gobblers. It was March 29 and I
had agreed to level off an old roadway
then go hunting.Well, I got through
with the work and now it was fun time.
I got out my Mossy Oak
brand camoflauge 20 gauge and put in
three #5 shot turkey loads and headed
out. I was going along on the road way
I was working on and I took a right
into the hayfield and was walking up
to a rise. I looked over the top and
saw a small black speck so I went down
a tree line and into the pasture beside
it and crawled to the top of a ridge
by a hunting house I used for deer hunting.
I noticed by now there were three gobblers
below me in the "hayfield"
so I crawled up under the gate and with
a mixture of wiggling and crawling,
I worked my way down 45 yds and got
on a brush line about 3 yds thick.
I now saw all three and
picked out the one struttin' close to
me and who had the biggest beard. I
pulled a bead, squeezed the trigger
and bamm! I killed a turkey with an
11 in. beard and 1.5 in. spurs. At 13
years old I am certainly proud.
